Writing An Editorial

Tonight for homework, pretend you are a writer for our Oceana paper, Shark Tale, and you want the Oceana community to stop using put-downs and insults on campus. It is your job to write an editorial, convincing people to stop using put downs.

Pick ONE word that we discussed today in class to focus on. It needs to be a word that DOES NOT apply to you.

Then, use the structure below to write your editorial.

1.  A hook or lead. This can be a question, a powerful quote, a statistic, or a very brief story (1-2 sentences at the most!) that connects to the insult/put-down you will be discussing.

2. Your position. State clearly why you think that this word should not be used by anyone on this campus any longer.

3. Supporting details. Spend a few sentences explaining WHY people should not use this word. Use as many facts as you can to support your argument.

4. Conclusion: Suggest a plan of action. What should people do if they hear this word? How can they encourage other people not to use this word?

Example:

Last week, I was in the cafeteria and a girl behind me in line called my friend a b***h. We got in a shouting match and almost got suspended. Why was I so angry? This word makes me infuriated because no woman should be called that word, since it is demeaning and sexist. While it is often the case that the b word is used by friends in a joking matter, I think that the Oceana community as a whole should stop using it. Women in the United States have fought for equal rights for over a hundred years, from getting the right to vote to getting paid equally at work. Why, then, should women call each other the b word and ignore all of the hard work women have gone through to become more equal? Oceana females—it is time to band together and stop degrading each other. If boys hear us using this word, they will think it’s acceptable for them to use it too—and it’s not. So let’s all make a change. Stop using the b word!

Homework for Monday 9/19

For Monday, please do the following:

1. Bring a shoebox to school
2. Bring materials to fill the shoebox--artifacts from your life (such as old IDs, photos, objects) or artifacts that you make (like a skateboard made of clay)
3. Bring any supplies you might need, such as glue or construction paper.

Ms. Scher's 3/6 Period: Please bring your signed progress reports to class and put them in the Inbox on Monday.

Identity Chart

For homework, please create an identity chart for yourself. Include 20 characteristics about you (look at the identity categories we came up with in class for ideas).  This chart should be about you, but it should be similar in style to the one you did for Anthony Wright in class today. Please make the chart beautiful and colorful, and have a specific color code or symbol for the characteristics that are assigned and the ones that are chosen.

Feature Article

Advisory Interview

Due Tuesday, September 6th

During the hourlong advisory, you met with many adults at Oceana who are unique and interesting. Tonight, imagine that you are a reporter for a website devoted to teachers and schools. Please choose two people you interviewed today, and write a feature article about each person (therefore, you should hand in TWO stories in all).

A feature article is a creative article that deals with real events, issues, and trends.

However, unlike straight news articles, it places emphasis on the people involved rather than on the facts of the news.

1. Start with a lead (the first sentence in your article). A lead can include a question, a quote from the person, a generalization, or an anecdote.
2. Include at least 4 facts that you learned about the person. These can be direct facts or statements in your own words.
3. Weave these facts together in a way that makes this an interesting STORY, not just a list of facts.
4. Conclude with a sentence or two about why this person is a valuable member of the Oceana community. What do they contribute to our school that makes them so great? It could be their sense of humor, their dedication to students, their outside interests, or other things.

Format:

• This should be typed or written in pen.
• Each feature should be one paragraph with at least 8 sentences.
• Use correct grammar and spelling.
• Write in the third person (do NOT use I, you, or we)

Example:

            “I love art and want to share my knowledge with my students.” These words were spoken by Oceana’s fantastic pottery teacher, Mr. Clay. For the past ten years,  Mr. Clay has been teaching at Oceana. Before that, he spent time in New Mexico, where he apprenticed with Joe Indigo, a famous artist. His experiences in New Mexico help him with his pottery curriculum, and he offers an Interim to New Mexico every year so that students can work with Joe Indigo. What about outside of school? During the summer and holiday breaks, Mr. Clay enjoys hang gliding and playing the flute in an Afro-Reggae band.  The Oceana community is so lucky to have such a passionate and experienced pottery teacher on campus—without him, students would not learn the joy of shaping clay into beautiful vases, pots, and bowls.
